Red foxes have the taxonomic name Vulpes vulpes based on their genus and species, respectively. The red fox is one of 34 species in the Canidae family, which includes wolves, dogs, coyotes and jackals.
Red foxes are the largest species of Vulpes, measuring between 455 and 900 millimeters in length. They are known for their vibrant fur, which varies from deep rusty red to soft yellowish-red. Melanism, or dark color variations, produces cross foxes and silver foxes. Cross foxes have two black intersecting stripes on their back and shoulders, and they make up roughly 25 percent of the species. Silver foxes have black or silver coloring and make up 10 percent of the population.
