What is the killer whale's scientific name?

The scientific name of the killer whale is Orcinus orca. Instantly recognized by its black and white color, adult orcas commonly reach sizes of 32 feet and 6 tons or greater.

The largest members of the dolphin family, orcas are some of the most powerful predators in the world and prefer colder coastal waters. They may hunt alone or in deadly pods of up to 40 whales, using distinctive sounds to signal the location of prey. Bearing teeth up to 4 inches long, they feed on fish, squid, seabirds, sea lions, whales and other marine mammals. They are known to grab seals right off the ice.
