The region of the United States that is called the "breadbasket" is the Great Plains. The Great Plains lie east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Mississippi River. The region is famous for its grain and corn production.
Parts or all of 10 states sit within the Great Plains. These states are North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Texas, Montana and New Mexico. The term "breadbasket" was used in the book Nine Nations of North America by Joel Garreau in 1981.
The official Great Plains region of North America also encompasses three provinces in Canada: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
