How do you remove a broken light bulb?

To remove a broken light bulb, turn off the circuit breaker, and break away the glass remains from the bulb base. Use a broken bulb extractor to turn and remove the base from the fixture.

  1. Turn off the power

    Turn off the circuit breaker. Test the light fixture with a circuit tester to ensure the power is off.

  2. Remove the glass remnants

    Put on gloves and eye protection, and break off the glass remnants from the base to pave the way for its removal. Collect the broken pieces in a trash bag.

  3. Remove the base

    Use the bulb extractor to turn the bulb base from the socket. Switch on the circuit breaker after removal.
