How do you remove a faucet stem?

Removing a faucet stem is an important step in many plumbing repair projects. This step requires basic tools and knowledge of the components of the faucet so the process can be handled without causing more problems or making a mess in the house. Removing the stem of the faucet involves unscrewing and removing several components in order to repair the faucet and prevent leaking.

Use the following steps to remove a faucet stem, especially if the faicet is leaking.

1. Turn off the water
Before any work is performed on a faucet, the water should be turned off completely. Turn the water off with the valve on the wall and then turn the faucet handle to allow the water to flow out until it stops. Turn the handle off.
2. Remove the handle
Unscrew the handle and remove it. Some handles snap into place while others are threaded and screw on.
3. Dismantle the rest of the faucet stem
Use a wrench to turn the packing nut counterclockwise until it loosens and comes off. Remove the packing, making note of how it is attached so new packing can be put into place when reassembling the faucet. Once the faucet stem is fully dismantled, repairing the link is usually as simple as cleaning the faucet and replacing the packing, then screwing the nut back on and replacing the faucet handle.
