Remove oil stains from upholstery by blotting and applying baking soda and a dry cleaning solution. The process requires only a few steps.
- Blot the oil
Use a clean, dry cloth to blot up as much of the oil as you can. Be careful not to rub the oil into the upholstery any further.
- Cover the stain with baking soda
Cover the oil with baking soda, and allow it to sit for 15 minutes.
- Vacuum up the baking soda
Vacuum all of the baking soda from the stain. If the baking soda is too hard to vacuum up, use a dull knife to scrape it off the upholstery.
- Color test the dry cleaning solution
If there is still oil on the upholstery, choose a small section that isn't visible to test the dry cleaning solution. Dab a tiny amount of solution onto a cloth, and apply it to spot. If it does not affect the color of the upholstery, move on to step five. If it does, repeat steps one through three.
- Apply dry cleaning solution
Dab some dry cleaning solution onto a clean, dry cloth, and gently apply it to the oil stain. Then, blot the area until the remaining oil is removed.
