Remove pine tar from clothing by pretreating the area with a stain removing, rubbing detergent into the cloth, scrubbing the spot, rinsing the area and washing the garment in hot water. This takes a few minutes plus a washing machine cycle. You need stain remover, detergent, access to a washing machine and hot water.
- Pretreat the area
Pretreat the pine tar stain by applying a stain remover to the area. This helps to remove the waxy part of the pine tar.
- Prepare the detergent
Add water to powdered detergent, and mix the two together until a thick paste forms. You can also use liquid detergent.
- Apply the detergent
Rub the detergent paste or liquid detergent into the pine tar stain. Allow the detergent to soak into the area for 30 minutes.
- Scrub the stain
Carefully scrub the stained area with a cloth. Avoid scrubbing too vigorously.
- Rinse the garment
Rinse the detergent out of the garment with hot water.
- Wash the garment
Place the garment in a washing machine. Add more fabric detergent and all-fabric bleach. This helps to remove the dye in the pine tar stain. Turn the settings of the washing machine to the hottest possible water. Put the garment through a wash cycle.
