Remove silicone caulk by performing a patch test, softening the caulk, cutting it with a sharp utility knife and then pulling it off. Remove the residue by soaking it in mineral spirits or denatured alcohol, scrubbing it with a scrub brush or using the utility knife to pull it off.
- Gather your supplies
Get a utility knife, a can of mineral spirits or denatured alcohol, pliers, a stiff scrub brush and some rags.
- Perform a patch test
Choose an out-of-sight area, and place a small amount of mineral spirits or denatured alcohol on it with a rag. Leave the spirits on the spot for a while, and then inspect the area to see if the color of the spot has changed. If so, remove the caulk without softening it first.
- Soften the silicone caulk
Soak some rags in mineral spirits, and place them on the caulk. Let the rags sit for a little while to soften the caulk.
- Cut and pull the caulk
Cut the caulk with the utility knife. Grab the cut end with pliers, and pull the caulk away from the area.
- Remove the residue
Soak the rags in mineral spirits, and place them on the silicone caulk residue. Let the rags sit for several hours.
- Remove the rags and scrub
Remove the rags, and scrub the residue with a scrub brush. Scrape stubborn spots with the utility knife.
