To remove wallpaper, combine hot water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, score the wallpaper, spray it with the diluted vinegar and peel it off. The required supplies are hot water, white vinegar, a spray bottle, a wallpaper scoring tool, a putty knife, work gloves and a stepladder.
- Dilute the vinegar
Combine equal parts white vinegar and hot water in a spray bottle, and screw on the cap.
- Score the wallpaper
Pierce the wallpaper with the scoring tool. Roll the tool over the wallpaper until it is riddled with holes.
- Soak the scored wallpaper
Saturate the scored wallpaper with the diluted vinegar. Allow the solution to soak the wallpaper for about 15 minutes.
- Test the adhesive
Try to peel away the wallpaper from the top corner of the wall. Move slowly, and pull the paper straight down toward the floor. If it does not pull away easily, apply more diluted vinegar, wait a few more minutes and then try again.
- Strip stubborn sections with a putty knife
Grasp a strip of wallpaper in one hand, and wedge the tip of a putty knife between the paper and the wall. Push the knife down along the wall as you pull down on the paper. This technique is especially helpful on very old wallpaper.
- Scrape off adhesive residue
After removing all of the wallpaper, scrape off the adhesive residue with the putty knife. Apply more diluted vinegar, if necessary, to remove any remaining residue.
