In order to receive a number on the Dawes Rolls, a Choctaw individual needed to establish a listing on a prior roll and the meet residency requirements put forth by the Dawes Commission. Other requirements included proof of lineage or marriage into the tribe.
The Dawes Commission operated originated in 1893 and produced the final rolls in 1907, with minor additions until 1914. The Dawes Rolls attempted to list all members of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw and Seminole tribes, also known as the Five Civilized Tribes. In all, a little more than 100,000 names appeared on the rolls.
Providing a direct link to an ancestor on the rolls is one of the methods for establishing Choctaw citizenship.
