The requirements to file a tax return depend on a person's age, marital status and income. Single taxpayers under age 65 must file if their income is at least $10,150. Married couples under age 65 must file if their income is at least $20,300, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
Self-employed individuals must file if they earn more than $400, notes the IRS. Dependent children must file if they have more than $1,000 in unearned income or more than $6,200 in earned income. Even though some low-income taxpayers don't have to file returns, the IRS advises them to file if they are eligible for various tax credits.
