How do you reset an iPhone?

An iPhone can be reset using two different methods: soft reset or hard reset. A soft reset involves power cycling or rebooting the iPhone. A hard reset, meanwhile, entails deleting all content and settings directly from the device or plugging the iPhone to a computer and resetting the device through iTunes.
An iPhone usually requires a soft reset when it is unable to function properly or the device freezes and becomes unresponsive. Resetting an iPhone, such as those using the iOS 7.1.1 operating system, is a quick and simple process.
- Simultaneously press the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons
- Allow the device to finish restarting
Press and hold the Home button on the bottom front part of the device while pressing and holding down the Sleep/Wake button on the top right for not less than 10 seconds. Release both buttons once the Apple logo pops up.
Wait for the iPhone to complete the rebooting process. Check the device if it is operating normally to ensure a successful soft reset.
It is considered good practice to back up important data on the iPhone before performing a hard reset. This type of operation formats the iPhone back to its default factory settings, which can be done directly from the device.
- Open the "Settings" application
- Delete all settings and content
Tap "Settings" and then tap "General." Scroll down and then tap "Reset."
Select "Erase All Content and Settings" under the "Reset" tab. Tap "Erase iPhone" to finish restoring the device to its original manufacturer settings.
