Do resident alien cards expire?

As of 2015, resident alien cards, also known as green cards, have an expiration date of 10 years from when they are issued, notes the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The time limit was put into place in 1989, and previous cards did not have an expiration date.

Although the cards do expire, individuals can renew them up to 6 months in advance of the expiration date. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website has an online renewal form to complete and also has a printable form that can be mailed in. After applying for a renewal, individuals can check the website for updates on the application, which can be approved or denied.
