What is the result of a dehydration of cyclohexanol experiment?
By Forinfos - 17/03/2025 - 0 comments
Dehydration of cyclohexanol produces water and cyclohexene as products. The basic dehydration reaction results in the loss of a water atom from the cyclohexanol and the formation of a double bond within the ring.
Most cyclohexanol dehydration experiments are catalyzed with an acid. Cyclohexanol consists of a ring of six carbons in which one of the carbons has an -OH group. The acid donates a proton to the -OH group on the cyclohexanol forming an H2O, which is lost as a water molecule. The carbon atom has a positive charge in place of the -OH group, and the molecule resolves the positive charge by forming a double bond. Cyclohexene is a ring of six carbons with one double bond between two of the carbons.
