Resurface a cutting board to restore its beauty and functionality. The process requires allowing the cutting board to dry overnight after applying the mineral oil and beeswax conditioning coat, and a second night of drying is necessary after applying the topcoat. The task requires beeswax, mineral oil, soft towels, sandpaper and a sanding block or electric sander.
- Clean the surface
Use a mild solution of dishwashing detergent and water to clean the surface of the cutting board. Rinse it with water and air dry.
- Sand the cutting board
Use 50-grit sandpaper and a sanding block to sand the surface of the cutting board. For larger cutting boards, use a small electric sander to reduce the labor required. Buff out any cuts or scratches, and restore the natural color of the wood. Use 100-grit sandpaper to remove any scratches from the previous sanding and to create a smooth surface. Wipe the cutting board with a painter's tack rag or other lint free cloth.
- Condition the board with mineral oil and beeswax
Add 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax shavings to 1 cup of mineral oil. Microwave the mixture to melt the wax. Allow the mixture to cool, and apply it to the board using a soft cloth. Continue applying this mixture until the cutting board stops absorbing it. Allow the wood to dry overnight.
- Wax the surface
Apply beeswax to the surface of the cutting board using a soft towel. Buff the topcoat using clean sections of the towel. After the wax dries overnight, use a clean towel to polish the surface to a shine.
