Retirees who continue to work must continue to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on their earned income, explains AARP. A retiree's employer must also pay its share of those taxes. In addition, retirees must pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on net self-employed business earnings over $400.

Retirees do not have to pay Social Security or Medicare taxes on any income derived from annuities or pension payments, though they may have to pay income tax on these payments. They also do not have to pay Social Security taxes on income derived from dividends or interest stemming from any investments or savings accounts, according to the Social Security Administration.
