How do you get rid of bed bugs for good?

To get rid of bed bugs, remove and wash all potentially infested textiles, wash and dry them, put nonwashables in the dryer for 30 minutes, vacuum potentially infested areas, seal off the mattress, and use contact or dust insecticides. Some infestations require professional intervention or fumigation.

1. Remove and wash bedding

   Wash the sheets, blankets and pillowcases in a washing machine on the highest setting. Put curtains, stuffed animals, pillows and other nonwashables in the dryer on the highest setting for at least 30 minutes.

2. Vacuum thoroughly

   Use a stiff brush to remove any bed bugs or eggs from the mattress seams. Vacuum the bed, furniture and floor multiple times. Throw the vacuum bags away in a secure location, away from the home.

3. Seal the mattress

   Using a plastic casing or a tightly woven cover, enclose the mattress completely. This suffocates any remaining bed bugs and also makes it impossible for them to feed.

4. Use insecticides

   Dust insecticides or contact insecticides can be both be effective treatments. Avoid using them in homes with pets or children, and follow the manufacturer's directions carefully.

   Many bed bug infestations require professional removal. It may be necessary to fumigate the home, which must be handled by an expert.
