The "age of majority" in most states is 18, and with that age comes the ability to serve in the military, get married and vote, explains the National Conference of State Legislatures. An 18-year-old is considered an adult and can make choices about his own life.
While the age of 18 allows an individual to make legal decisions, a person under the age of 21 cannot legally purchase alcoholic beverages anywhere in the United States, notes the Federal Trade Commission. Some states allow young adults under the age of 21 to consume alcohol privately with parental oversight, whether for religious reasons or medical purposes, as of 2015, notes ProCon.org.
