Ring engraving is the practice of inscribing words or images on a ring, usually on the inside of the band. Wedding and engagement rings are often engraved with special inscriptions written or chosen by the couple getting married.
Ring and jewelry engraving began during the Middle Ages, when goldsmiths started to inscribe pieces with symbols that identified the work as their own. Nobility also began to have jewelry engraved with family crests and other personal symbols. Modern engraving can be done on both on the metal part of a ring and directly on diamonds or other precious jewels using a laser.
