Ringworm is a skin infection that is caused by fungi. The condition is common in children and usually occurs as several itchy, red patches on the skin, as stated by MedlinePlus.
Ringworm occurs when a fungus called "tinea" grows on the skin and the rash can appear anywhere on the body. The condition is not serious and can clear up with the use of creams. Ringworm is contagious so it can be spread from one person to another through direct contact. It can also be spread from animals, such as dogs and cats. Ringworm that occurs on the scalp may need prescription medicine, as stated by NHS.
