Rio de Janeiro is located on the Atlantic coast of Brazil in the southeastern part of the country. The city faces south with a coastline that runs east to west, and it is close to the Tropic of Capricorn.

Rio de Janeiro is 486.5 square miles in area. As of 2014, the population of the city is 6,453,682 people, and the metropolitan area consists of 12,090,607 people, making it the second most populous metropolitan area in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro used to be Brazil's capital city, but it was replaced by Brasilia in 1960. In 2016, Rio de Janeiro is slated to become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics.
