The main role of a sociologist is to study how societies function, states HumanServicesEDU.org. A sociologist studies how societies are organized and interact within themselves and with each other.
This type of scientist studies human behavior by looking at various groups and organizations, notes the Department of Labor. They find work through colleges, consulting firms or state or federal programs. Each sociologist chooses a main area in which he or she wants to study. This may be related to human services, education and more. In order to become a sociologist, a person must obtain a master's degree. Some careers require the person to have a PhD.
