What is the role of an underwriter?

There are different types of underwriters but, overall, no matter what industry they are in, they make the final decisions on approvals for the various industries they cover. Underwriters are most commonly seen in the home mortgage and insurance industries.

Once someone has made an offer on a home, the underwriter goes through the application and verifies that all of the information that has been given is correct. In relation to home insurance or health insurance, underwriters decided if the person applying for insurance, or the home being insured, is a low risk factor. There are numerous factors in deciding whether to insure something, including the potential for loss and potential exposure to high-risk situations.
