Wild onions are safe to eat, and they have a very distinct appearance and smell that make them easy to identify. However, there is a plant called the death camas that looks very similar to the wild onion but is very poisonous.
Wild onions and death camas are native to the same areas, and may even be found growing clustered together. The easiest way to tell these two plants apart is by their smell. Wild onions have a sharp, tangy onion smell, while the death camas has a mild smell. The death camas also tastes extremely bitter when compared to wild onion.
