Is it safe to use hydrogen peroxide for cat wound care?

Veterinarians do not recommend using hydrogen peroxide for cat wound care, as doing so may cause damage to the tissue. Instead, vets recommend using povidone iodine that is diluted until it is the color of weak tea, or chlorhexidine diacetate that is diluted to a pale blue color.

To clean minor cuts or scrapes that are not serious enough to warrant a visit to the vet, PetMD recommends using plain water or an antiseptic solution on a cloth or gauze. The surface of the wound can be gently flushed with the solution using a syringe. For lacerations that are deep or long or for puncture wounds, cleaning the wound, but not flushing it, is recommended.
