Does salt water freeze?

By Forinfos - 28/02/2026 - 0 comments

Saltwater freezes, but it does so at a lower temperature than fresh water. The exact temperature of the freezing point depends on the amount of salt in the water.

A fully saturated pool of saltwater freezes at a temperature of minus 5.98 degrees Fahrenheit. Ocean water freezes at 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the ice formed from freezing ocean water does not contain much salt due to only the water freezing. As saltwater becomes colder, it gets more dense due to the freezing water leaving behind more and more salt, which is denser than water. Fresh water does not become more dense as it freezes.
