The Central Florida city of Sanford is about 20 miles northeast of Orlando and just east of Interstate 4. The city of more than 50,000 residents rests on the southern shore of Lake Monroe and is the county seat of Seminole County.
Named after founder Henry Shelton Sanford, the city was incorporated in 1877. The downtown district of present-day Sanford features a variety of antique shops, art galleries and restaurants. Sanford is home to Orlando Sanford International Airport, which as of 2013 is one of the busiest 30 airports in the world. The main attraction of the city is the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens, which draws up to 300,000 visitors each year.
