Sarah Caldwell was born on March 6, 1924, in Maryville, Missouri. She was an opera conductor, producer and impresario. She died of heart failure at the age of 82 on March 23, 2006, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
Sarah Caldwell started giving public violin recitals at the age of 6 and was considered a child prodigy. She attended Fayetteville High School, Hendrix College, the University of Arkansas and the New England Conservatory of Music. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea†was her first solo production. She was head of the Boston University Opera Workshop from 1952 to 1960, and she founded the Opera Company of Boston in 1957.
