Saran Wrap is made of plastic. Specifically, it is made of polyvinylidene chloride. Recently, manufacturers have been using low-density polyethylene as an alternative to traditional plastic wrap. However, it does not cling as well to objects. A worker at Dow Chemical invented plastic wrap in 1933.
Saran Wrap, known generically as plastic wrap, is safe to use in the microwave, but it cannot be used in the oven. When used in the microwave, it should not touch foods that are high in fat. The heated fat can melt the plastic wrap. Plastic wrap can effectively seal frozen food containers, but it is not a good insulator.
