Is SATA III backwards compatible?

All of the SATA III versions are compatible with SATA II and SATA I interface ports. However, the maximum data transfer rate is much slower because of the speed limitations of SATA I and SATA II ports, according to SanDisk.
There are currently three versions of SATA III hard drives, and these are SATA 3 with a 6 Gbits/s data transfer rate, SATA 3.1 (also known as mSATA) with a 6 Gbits/s data transfer rate and SATA 3.2 (also known as SATA M.2) with a 16 Gbits/s data transfer rate, according to Tom Nelson of About.com. All of these versions use the same connector and cables as previous SATA generations.
