The schefflera plant is toxic to cats, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The schefflera is also known as the umbrella tree, the Australian ivy palm, the octopus tree and starleaf.
The schefflera plant has calcium oxalate crystals, which makes it toxic, according to the ASPCA. Some common poisoning signs for cats include mouth burning and irritation, drooling, vomiting, trouble swallowing and other oral issues. The Pet Poison Helpline states that poisoning signs can appear immediately, with the pet beginning to claw at its face. Chewing or biting the plant releases the chemicals into the pet's bloodstream, which triggers the reaction.
