A science project that can involve growing a bean plant is "Observation of changes in a plant as it grows." Plant a bean and care for it as it grows while observing its progress and recording its appearance, measurements and how long it took for each major transformation to occur.

This science project is for children aged 3 to 6 years. The goal of the project is to learn about transformation and change in plants. An additional learning goal is a better grasp of the concept of time and how it is measured.

1. Prepare the materials
This science project needs potting soil, cups to put it in and beans to plant. For measuring, use a small wooden stick or a piece of cardboard to write measurements and dates directly on them. Alternatively, have a ruler to measure the plant.
2. Plant the bean
Fill the cups with soil. Plant the beans, putting more than one into each receptacle, as some beans might not sprout. Water the soil. Put the cups in a warm sunny place, outside or on a windowsill. As the bean plant grows, don't forget to water it.
3. Record observations
Take photos and make a record of each stage of the bean's sprouting and growing. Note the date the bean was planted. Describe the way the sprouts look. Measure the plant regularly as it grows. If a flower and beans grow on the plant, record this along with how long it took from the planting date.
