The best place for aurora borealis viewing is anywhere in Scandinavia. Other good places to see the phenomenon are in northern Russia, southern Greenland and the Arctic Circle. Northern Canada and northern Alaska were also places to view an aurora borealis.

However, as of March 2015 it was possible to see an aurora borealis as far south as central California. The beautiful, shifting lights of the aurora occur when the electrons in the solar wind stimulate oxygen and other elements in the atmosphere. The dominant colors of the aurora depend on which elements are excited. Most auroras are green, and red and blue auroras are less common.
