The gravitational pull on Mars is 38 percent that of the gravity of Earth, explains researchers at the California Institute of Technology. The lower gravitational force is due to the smaller mass of the planet.
With a gravitational constant of 0.38, a 100-pound person on Earth weighs 38 pounds on Mars. This low gravity causes volcanic lava to be thicker on Mars and prevents volcanoes from cooling off at the same rate as volcanoes on Earth, elaborates Dr. Ryan Anderson of the U.S. Geographical Survey. The lava flow also is longer, especially with the natural valleys on the planet. Gas within the lava and other elements are more likely to explode.
