What is the scientific classification of Volvox ?

The scientific classification of Volvox, according to the Encyclopedia of Life, is species of green algae from the genus of the chlorophytes. The species resides in a number of freshwater environments and was first discovered and reported in 1700 by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

Volvox forms types of spherical colonies that can hold around 50,000 cells. They are considered to be the most advanced in various series of the genera that are able to develop spherical colonies. Mature Volvox colonies are composed of a variety of flagellate cells that can be compared to Chlamydomonas. The cells behave in coordinated fashions, with very distinctive posterior and anterior poles.
