The scientific name for the black bear is Ursus Americanus. American black bears can be found all across North America, from Alaska down to Mexico.
Black bears are covered in thick black hair and have round ears, long snouts and short tails. Males are referred to as boars and can reach a weight of up to 300 pounds. Females are called sows and only grow to be between 100 and 175 pounds. After they reach sexual maturity, females mate every other year and often have twins. The black bear diet consists of small mammals, grasses, flowers, fruit, grubs and insects.
