The scientific name for a silverback gorilla is gorilla beringei beringei. Silverback gorillas are critically endangered, with only 700 to 900 left in the wild.
Silverbacks are often called mountain gorillas because they are found in the mountain regions of eastern Africa. They stand between four to six feet tall and weigh between 215 to 485 pounds, with the male being larger than the female. Upon maturity into adulthood, male silverback gorillas develop the distinctive line of silver-looking hair on their backs. These gorillas stay in groups called troops with 30 or more individuals led by the oldest, most dominant male gorilla. Troops consist of younger males, females and their offspring.
