Verruca is the medical word for wart, and this word comes from Latin. Verruca vulgaris refers to a common wart. Warts are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus or HPV.
Plantar warts are located on the sole of the foot. Warts located on the genitals are called venereal warts and are transmitted by sexual contact.
Warts can grow on any part of the body and generally go away within months or years without treatment.
The virus usually enters the body in an area of broken skin and causes the top layer of skin to grow rapidly, forming the wart.
