What is seafoam?

Sea foam or spume is a thick foam usually seen in coastal regions that forms as the result of the wind and waves agitating seawater full of microscopic organic matter such as proteins, fats and dead algae. It is normally associated with algae blooms, and it is a common occurrence.
Most sea foams are harmless to humans and often indicate that the oceanic ecosystem is indeed healthy. However, if the algae that cause it are toxic, such as the Karenia brevis, it can cause skin irritation and could be dangerous to people who suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma.
