Do seals eat penguins?

Leopard seals, as the only species of seal to prey on warm-blooded animals, eat penguins and smaller seals in addition to a more conventional diet of fish and squid. Leopard seals grow to nearly 12 feet in length and can weigh over 800 pounds.

Leopard seals live in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. A common tactic of the leopard seal is to patiently wait near an ice shelf and grab any penguin that tries to enter the water. Leopard seals are mostly solitary, except for mating season when they form small groups. Female leopard seals give birth following nine months of gestation. Mothers protect their pups until the offspring are old enough to defend themselves.
