How do you season a cast iron skillet?

Cast iron skillets are seasoned by baking oil into the skillet within the oven. Proper maintenance and upkeep with seasoning can extend the lifetime of a cast iron skillet.
- Wash and dry your cast iron
Cast iron is always washed first and then dried thoroughly, prior to attempting to season a piece. A combination of water with a light amount of soap is best for this part.
- Coat with oil
Once the cast iron is dry, rub it with a thin coating of oil. Use just enough to soak into the cast iron without being overly sticky.
- Proceed to seasoning
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit, and then place the skillet upside down on the middle rack of the oven. Place a piece of aluminum foil underneath the skillet in order to catch any drippings. Leave the skillet in the oven for one hour.
- Cool for use
Leave the skillet in the oven for a while to allow it to cool down sufficiently. Once cool to the touch, the skillet can be utilized in cooking.
- Heat and repeat
Cook with your new cast iron, then wash and dry as before. Coat the skillet with a thin layer of vegetable oil and store in a cool dark place until its next use.
