What is "Second Life"?

Second Life is an online virtual world that is rendered in three dimensions and provides a space for users to interact with each other and the environment through their avatar. The program was initially launched on June 23, 2003, by a San Francisco-based company called Linden Lab.

User avatars are called residents in the program and are able to interact with places, objects and other residents. Second Life also operates using a virtual currency called the Linden Dollar that can be exchanged for real money. As of 2014, Second Life has a reported active user base of 1 million regular users.
