Photographs, barcodes and holograms are common security features on modern employee identification badges, as of 2015. Electronic security measures include magnetic stripes, smart chips and RFID tags embedded in the ID card. The employee's name, ID number and security clearance levels can be programmed into the card for electronic retrieval.

Imprinting the employee's signature or fingerprint on the ID card gives security personnel a way to determine whether the card is genuine. If an impostor tries to replicate the other information on the ID card, he must also be able to forge the employee's signature or produce a matching fingerprint to pass the security check.
