What is the seigneurial system?

The seigneurial system was a system of institutionalized land distribution put into effect in 1627 in New France. It was abolished in 1854.

Under the seigneurial system, families were given land based on a royalty system and the system was implemented to increase settlement to the area. These families provided their own food, shelter and heating needs in exchange for the land they were given, taking the burden off the government. Because families got to choose where they wanted to settle down, the seigneurial system quickly backfired and became a system of elitists rather than a way to help people who needed it.
