How do you set up a living room?

One basic design strategy for setting up a living room is to arrange furniture pieces around a focal point, such as a fireplace, a large painting or an accent wall. This focal design element acts as an anchor to give the room a unified, grounded look. From that point, chairs and couches should be placed close enough to each other to create a cosy, conversation friendly grouping.

The coffee table should be close enough for seated guests to reach easily because it provides a place to sit drinks or snacks. However, it should not be so close that limits a person's legroom. Furniture placement should allow for easy movement throughout the room. Providing a pathway with up to 4 feet of walking space makes the room accessible and inviting. Another thing to consider is scale. While petite, delicate furniture is perfectly suited to small spaces, it can look lost in large rooms. The weight and presence of large furniture is needed to create a balanced look in a large room with high ceilings. Couches and large furniture items in neutral tones provide decorating versatility because they can be matched with a variety of colors. Adding accent pieces, such as toss cushions and throws, is a quick and inexpensive way to brighten a living room with color.
