Mark Twain set "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in Missouri in the 1840s. Twain describes the location, protagonist Tom's hometown, as "the poor little shabby village of St. Petersburg," which is a fictional town by the Mississippi River.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is a novel about a boy's adventures about town, particularly with the outcast Huckleberry Finn and, later, classmate Rebecca Thatcher. Twain was born Samuel L. Clemens in Florida, Missouri, in the 1830s. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, and wrote "Life on the Mississippi," another book set along the Mississippi River. There is a real town called St. Peters in Missouri.
