Sikh devotional songs, known as Shabad Gurbani, include the daily worship chant, "Gur Satigur Ka Jo Sikh Akhaa-ae" (“One Who Calls Them-self a Sikh of The Guruâ€) and the hymn of encouragement, "Angeekaar Keeaa Prabh Apnai" (“God Has Made Me His Ownâ€). Shabads also celebrate special occasions.
Shabad Gurbani lyrics include Sikh scriptures from the sacred book, Guru Granth Sahib, and are chanted in the melodious hue of musical measures and scales. A collection of these songs is printed in the Sikh hymnal, Amrit Kirtan, and used to accompany many important life events.
Singing and inner reflection of scripture are central focuses of Sikh worship. At Sikh funeral services, hymns such as "Sooraj Kiran Milae" (“The Sunbeam Blends With Sunlightâ€) provide comforting messages about departed souls unifying with their creator. At weddings, a series of shabads express messages about the bride and groom’s divine union, such as "Keeta Loree-ai Kaam" (“Tell Your Wishes to the Lordâ€) and "Dhan Pir El Na Akhee-an" (“One Soul Shared by Two Bodiesâ€). At birthday celebrations, chants of hope and blessings, such as "Poota Mata Kee Asees" (“A Mother’s Blessings for Her Childâ€) and "Jamia Poot Bhagat Govind Ka" (“A Son Is Bornâ€) are often recited.
