The shaft of a long bone is known as the diaphysis. According to the University of Virginia, bones that include the tibia, femur and humerus consist of a long central shaft with rounded ends known as the epiphyses.
The bones that make up the skeletal system are needed to provide the body with shape and support, as well as protection for certain internal organs. Long bones are made up of several sections including the metaphysis, the area of bone between the diaphysis, and the epiphysis, as well as plates of cartilage, known as epiphyseal plates. These plates ossify at the conclusion of puberty and limit further growth.
