Are there sharks in Portugal?
By Forinfos - 02/07/2025 - 0 comments
Many shark species live off the Portuguese coast, including a deep-sea species called the Portuguese dogfish. Among the other shark species that range near Portugal's shores are goblin sharks, hammerheads and makos.
The Portuguese dogfish was first sighted off the Iberian peninsula but is now known to live worldwide. Nevertheless, they are still common off the Portuguese coast, where they are widely fished for food.
Another deep-sea shark species found in Portugal is the rare goblin shark, which has a toothy snout. Hammerheads and the long-fin mako can sometimes be sighted off the coast of Algarve, a southern province of Portugal with many dolphin-watching tours.
