As of March 2015, only a single dose of the herpes zoster, or shingles, vaccine is recommended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, studies regarding the need and effectiveness of a shingles booster vaccine are ongoing.
The shingles vaccine is recommended for all adults over the age of 60 who are not immunocompromised, according to Mayo Clinic. This includes patients who have had shingles in the past and those who have not.
Although shingles is not life-threatening, the viral disease can be very painful, notes Mayo Clinic. Patients experience a red rash of fluid-filled blisters, often accompanied by tingling, burning and nerve pain.
